365Gay.com Breaks Down Calling in Gay

Posted by amy On December - 9 - 2008

Tomorrow, across the country, people will Call in Gay and dedicate their day toward volunteering! Where will you be tomorrow? What will you be doing? A great deal of people are hopping on board and rumors are starting to spread about which industry could be impacted the most. Equality groups around the nation are planning events to gain signatures for marriage equality. The Courage Campaign is going full force working toward 1 million signatures to repeal Prop 8. And volunteer efforts are being led at local homeless shelters, retirement centers, and venues for our Food Drive.

Here’s what David Craig (DWAG creator) has to say about Day Without a Gay – Shedding some light on the main question: Why Day Without a Gay.

Can’t call in Gay? You can still join in making a HUGE Impact.
Some of us are extremely lucky to work in a pro-LGBTQ company. People are out and proud and want to continue their impact at work. Others live in one of the 30 States where you can still be fired based on your sexual orientation. We encourage you not to risk calling in if you fear for your job.

That said, here are 5 ways you can make an impact tomorrow:
1. Volunteer your time and services after work
2. Do not buy anything
3. Do not watch TV or use your cell phone
4. Do not go online (yup, don’t even visit this site tomorrow)… Online advertising is everywhere and a simple page load could cause money to be spent.
5. Do not buy lunch (and don’t go out today to get what you need for lunch tomorrow), find something you already have and pack your lunch.

  1. Sean Said,

hello, I’m Sean, and I’m straight, but i have to say, in my eyes proposition 8 is just another form of segragation. Its another way to devide the people. I belive god made all people equal,Including the gay’s. I wish you the best of luck and hope you win next election.

  3. Heather Mac Said,

I’m a bi woman married to a straight man. He can’t join the fray because he’s army (and deployed), but I’ll be away from the TV, the computer, and the stores tomorrow! And I don’t know where all the volunteer opportunities are in this new place where I live, but I’ll take my to-donate stuff to the post thrift store. Or something. I want to be a part of this!

  5. deb Said,

Hi. I’ve linked to this site with a post about today. Please come over and take my poll. Will you call in gay today? http://dhconcerts.wordpress.com/2008/12/10/will-you-call-in-gay-today-december-10-2008-wednesday/

  6. Lynn Said,

What if you’re a gay business owner and can’t afford to close down your business for one day? What if you work for said business?

I think in theory, the idea is great, but it is not accessible for everyone. I work for a gay owned nonprofit. Instead of calling in gay, I am going to write a blog post about a LGBT Bloggers Summit I attended over the weekend.

  8. cm Said,

Please…….calling in gay will get you fired unless you pre-arranged a sick day or vacation day. Why do this now? March 9th is the date to watch for the Supreme Court to review prop 8. Why hurt the economy even more so over your disappointment in the passage of a proposition? Why can’t we all just get the economy back on track, get BACK to work, and let the court decide what to do March 9th.

I don’t CARE if you are gay or straight, just put things into perspective please. Be professional, not sore losers.

  9. William Said,

I am supportive of the “day without a gay”. I understand how money “talks” in our culture. Even when it comes to equal rights. I am appaled that the Mormon Church encouraged it’s members to “give of all means and support to pass propsition 8″. Has anyone considered calling/emailing the Mormon Church at (888) 537 7111 http://www.mormon.org/bookofmormon and request a “free” Book of Mormon? 0bviously this would cost the Mormon Church considerable expense. How would they seperate the gay requests from the “legitimate” requests. I think it would also have great impact on their missionary budget. I think hitting them where it hurts…in the pocket…is reasonable and acceptable under the circumstances.

As PEI’s first appointed MARRIAGE COMMISSIONER I have married many Americans who are over the moon while here but sadly remember when they go home they are probably not accepted Such a shame.

Has anyone heard what happened yesterday? How did this actually play out? (I posted about it with a poll to ask if people would be staying out of work.)

  13. cm Said,

in Orange County, not much of a sick day or gay day.
No one understands that in a professional workplace, politics has NO place there. Employers are very very supportive of their employees who are gay, but to backstab them by calling out “gay” was useless and unprofessional. March 9th is the day to watch the courts so quit it and get back to work people!!!! Let’s fix the economy first! Nothin you can do until the courts decide in March so quit whining and crying and start working!
