MILK Opens Today in Select Theaters – Where to See it

Posted by amy On November - 26 - 2008

Gus Van Sant’s MILK opens today in select theaters and then nationwide next week (Dec. 5th). This film commemorates a man of great stature who many view as an icon of the gay rights movement. Harvey Milk helped our community gain visibility in a new way and his life is one to be remembered and respected. To drive attention to this important movie, drive attendance, and raise awareness about the LGBTQ community, we hope to make MILK one of the highest grossing movies of the December 5th weekend. As such, for those of you that see it this weekend, we encourage you to see it again next week.

Finally, there has been quite a lot of conversation about where to not see MILK, but we want to provide you with a list of PRO-LGBTQ theaters that we hope you’ll support when choosing where to see this movie:

If you have others to add to this list, please add your comments.

  1. JB Said,

I had the great priviledge of seeing an advance screening of the movie MILK. You MUST go and see this movie when it opens. For one, it’s a gorgeous piece of work. But also, if you are, in any way, feeling frustrated or angry or disappointed by the passing of Proposition 8… the issues dealt with in the movie are hauntingly similar. The rhetoric will make you cringe. The treatment of human beings will make you sad. The joining of the gay community championed by Harvey Milk will renew your sense of hope for our future. At the conclusion of the movie…the audience openly cheered and clapped. And then they clapped some more. I had this feeling, while the applause was taking place, that this appreciation wasn’t just for this excellent movie, or just for Gus Van Sant’s extraordinary direction, or for Sean Penn’s AMAZING portrayal, or for the rest the cast and production, and not just for the memory of this true hero in gay history. I felt like it was for US too. We were applauding US. The US of today. The US of today fighting for a cause that represents a continued struggle that was a part of the history that we had just witnessed. The US that would have made Harvey Milk proud.

(ps…remember…you should NOT see this movie at a Cinemark. But DEFINITELY see it somewhere else. See posted list of LGBTQ friendly theaters above. )

  3. Runningusa Said,

LET’S HAVE A “MILK” PARTY. Get together with others and have an night out to see Milk. After the movie go to a gay or gay-friendly enviornment and enjoy each other’s company.
